Shut it Down

Biden temporarily shuts down the border.

Biden Says Borders Closed!

Temporarily anyway…

President Biden signed an executive action on Tuesday that will temporarily shut down asylum requests, in response to the migrant influx at the nation’s southern border.

The shutdown, theoretically, would not occur until daily encounters, between the official ports of entry, top 2,500. However, in a case of semantics, that number has already been met, so the shutdown will go into effect immediately.

➔ Border shall reopen once the number falls to 1,500.

➔ Biden said the border “is not a political issue to be weaponized,” while announcing this order.

➔ Texas state Rep. Eddie Morales Jr. called it “one of a number of steps that are necessary for us to be able to secure the border.”

However, some on the Republican side of the aisle have called this move too little, too late. Interestingly enough, President Trump tried to enact similar border restrictions in 2018, but was blocked by the courts at the time.

According to polling, Trump has a 30-point edge over Biden with registered voters on the topic of immigration and border security, including a 23-point edge among Latino voters.

With the Presidential Election on tap, this could be President Biden’s attempt to curry favor with some of those voters.
